2.Udimet 720Li Introduction

UDIMET 720Li (U720Li) is a high strength nickel-based superalloy which is being considered for applications within modern gas turbine aero-engines, e.g. for high integrity rotating components such as high pressure (HP) turbine discs. The chemical composition of the alloy is related to that of U720 from which it is derived, but differs from it with respect to the chromium, carbon and boron levels. Lower carbon and boron contents facilitate the use of secondary melting techniques for ingot conversion prior to forging, so that the need for powder processing is avoided. The reduced chromium content means that U720Li is less prone to sigma phase formation than U720, so that the mechanical properties are less likely to degrade during high temperature service.
